Ebsar Masr Foundation for Sustainable Development

Ebsar Masr is an Egyptian civil foundation working for sustainable community development.

Our Philosophy: From Barriers to Capabilities

For us, development is not a single sector. It is a person’s progress from a barrier that holds them back to a capability or opportunity that helps them move forward.

Areas of Work

We work in five complementary areas, united by a single method: identify the barrier, then build the capability that overcomes it. No area ranks above another.

The barrier: limited access to learning, difficulties at school, and gaps in the skills needed for life and work in a digital age.

The capability we work toward: learning and skills that open up wider choices.

The barrier: the physical and social obstacles that limit the participation of people with disabilities, including blind people.

The capability we work toward: independence, mobility, learning, and full participation in society.

The barrier: difficulty accessing health services and medicines, and limited health awareness.

The capability we work toward: healthier lives and easier access to care.

The barrier: unemployment, especially among young people and recent graduates, and a lack of vocational skills and income opportunities.

The capability we work toward: a stable income and the ability to be self-reliant and support a family.

The barrier: difficult living conditions and crises that can prevent families from achieving stability and deprive children of opportunities to learn and grow.

The capability we work toward: stability that allows a family to move forward and become self-reliant.

Vision

Communities across Egypt where every person has a real chance to overcome what holds them back, to access education, knowledge, health and work, and to take a full part in the life of their community, with resources used responsibly and sustainably.

Mission

We work to remove or reduce the barriers that limit the opportunities of individuals, families and communities in Egypt, and to build their capabilities through education and training, health support and awareness, disability inclusion, economic opportunity, and community and family support. We do this in partnership with local communities and partner organizations, with the aim of achieving lasting change.

Commitments Across All Our Work

Knowledge, Culture & Awareness. We believe awareness and knowledge are part of removing barriers. This includes cultural, scientific and awareness seminars, lectures and gatherings; producing awareness materials and sharing them through audio-visual media; cultural and scientific trips; and scientific research and knowledge sharing.

Environment & Sustainability. We are committed to taking environmental considerations into account in our work, and we aim to develop initiatives for environmental awareness, sustainable consumption, and the responsible use of resources at community level.

Technology as a Tool for Empowerment. We see technology and digital skills as a way to widen learning opportunities, support the inclusion of people with disabilities, open doors to work, and improve people’s access to information and services.

Our Approach

We start from real need. We design our work around what people actually need, by listening to them and involving them.

Assistance is a tool; development is the goal. Direct assistance can be the right step: treatment, medicine, food support, an assistive device, or financial or in-kind support. We provide it when it removes or eases a barrier, and wherever possible we aim for it to lead to a better capability or opportunity for the person or family.

We build capability and open opportunity. We combine practical support with education, skills-building and opportunity creation, because lasting change is change that people own themselves.

We work in partnership. Working with local communities, specialist organizations and volunteers improves the quality of our work and extends its reach, while awareness-raising and technology support all of it.

Who We Serve

We work for communities in Egypt, with particular attention to people facing barriers that limit their access to opportunity, including:

  • families and communities most in need
  • children, mothers and families
  • young people and recent graduates
  • people with disabilities, including blind people
  • anyone who needs access to education, skills, health information or a source of income
